Making progress

Have been studying hard this semester, but also trying to find time for side projects and a bit of gaming.

More details? OK…

I got myself a Raspberry Pi Camera module a few weeks ago. Managed to set it up as a web cam for video streaming to monitor what’s going on inside the house while we were away for Christmas holidays. That was quite easy, with the help of some python libraries. Possible future experiments: set up a web server, so that it can handle multiple clients for the stream, with ease.

After that I experimented with timelapses. I set out using cron for taking a picture every x seconds, but I didn’t really like it, and internet opinions shared my view. So I wrote a simple script, defining the duration of the timelapse and the picture intervals. I mounted a hard drive, as I calculated the output to be around 3GB, and ran some tests. Test results were great, and you can now watch my first complete timelapse on YouTube. I am hoping to continue the timelapses, with photos from the country and my village, and maybe of Athens too, if I can find a better spot for the pi. 🙂

Have finally started working with git and managed to understand how pulls, pushes, commits, etc work. Crunchbang has been a great Linux environment for me, but I am soon going to switch to ArchBang, being jealous of all the bleeding edge stuff and such. 😛

Helped with a FOSS presentation about AUEB’s FOSS community and it feels good to give others the chance to learn about open source projects as it was given to me, 3-4 years ago. With the assistance of the rest of the guys we should continue making presentations about interesting stuff through the next semester too.

Finally, I got my first job as  a Systems Administrator! 🙂
